Anti-Drug Campaigns Dumb Down Vital Message

DWR: Saturday, August 16, 2008
Oops, Last year, David Krahl worked for Calvina Fay as deputy director of the Drug Free America Foundation, lobbying against medical marijuana. Seems he's learned a few things since then.

Mel Sembler and his wife Betty founded Straight, Inc., a drug treatment program for youth that used sleep deprivation, starvation, beatings, denial of basic health needs, sexual assault, deprivation of liberty and speech and psychological torture (Straight, Inc. later became Drug Free America Foundation. He was appointed ambassador to Australia by George H.W. Bush and Ambassador to Italy by George W. Bush, and is working for Mitt Romney's campaign as well as chairing the Scooter Libby Defense fund.

The Agitator reports that Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has hired Mel Sembler to raise money for him. This is something we mentioned in passing earlier this year, but Maia Szalavitz has a strong article in Reason about Mitt Romney and his connection to child torturer Mel Sembler (founder of Straight, Inc.): Romney, Torture, and Teens

Ambassador de Sade, By John Gorenfeld in AlterNet
Bush's ambassador to Italy doesn't speak Italian, and his qualifications seem to be a history of running a program that tortured kids. That's right. Ambassador Mel Sembler and his wife ran STRAIGHT, Inc.... before seeing it dismantled by a breathtaking array of institutional abuse claims by mid-1993. Just one of many survivors is Samantha Monroe, now a travel agent in Pennsylvania, who told The Montel Williams show this year about overcoming beatings, rape by a counselor, forced hunger, and the confinement to a janitor's closet in "humble pants" -- which contained weeks of her own urine, feces and menstrual blood. During this "timeout," she gnawed her cheek and spat blood at her overseers. "I refused to let them take my mind," she says of the program. The abuse took years to overcome.

Speaking of the children
I had missed this when it came out, but it seems Joe Lieberman has taken up with child abuser Mel Sembler, the founder of Straight, Inc.

Update: -- Straight, Inc. became Calvina Fay's Drug Free America

formerly known as Straight, Inc.

From 1976-1985 it was known as Straight, Inc. and had a reputation for abusing kids as a drug rehabilitation program. In 1985 it changed its name to Straight Foundation, Inc. in order to protect its money and its principals from civil suits. In 1995 it was changed again to Drug Free America Foundation. DFAF is a national and international drug policy think tank and provider of services for drug free work places.

Was a young Charlie Crist ever in a drug rehab?
Friday, September 29, 2006

The Seed was a teen drug rehabilitation chain in Florida in the 1970s. The US Senate accused the program of using North Korean brainwashing methods on American kids. Ambassador Melvin Sembler patterned Straight, Inc. after The Seed. Mel Sembler's son Brent and Charlie Crist are childhood friends. Today Brent Sembler is Charlie Crist's finance chairman. Mel Sembler has disclosed, by deduction, that Brent Sembler was in The Seed. One recruitment method used by The Seed was to get kids already in the program to rat on their friends and siblings to get them in the cult too.

Charlie Crist's dad was on The Seed's Advisory Board. Since The Seed and Straight had reputations for abuse and cult-like behavior, most adults associated with these cults (other than program employees) were parents who had a child in the program--parents like Mel Sembler who founded his own Seed-like treatment cult. So we ask the question. If you have any information on whether Florida's gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist was in The Seed, please send your confidential correspondence to wesfager@thestraights.com.

Lock 'em all up, for Crist's sake!

Straight, Inc. closed in 1993 on the heels of state investigations and law suits [the FBI investigated Straight in 1993 for alleged financial fraud but no indictments were handed down], but Straight Foundation, Inc., the education arm of Straight, continues to operate as a national and international drug policy think tank under the name Drug Free America Foundation. The president's brother, Governor Jeb Bush, and other high-level Republicans serve on DFAF's Advisory Board. Today Betty Sembler and other former Straight officials are directors for Operation PAR, another Pinellas County, Florida-based drug rehab program. PAR has never been accused of abuse. There are many second-generation Straights still in operation (see flow chart [1]) and some of these have been accused of abuse

Putting Faith In a Social Service Role; Church-Based Providers Freed From Many Rules

CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex.- Over the door of one church-based drug treatment center in Houston, a sign printed in foot-high letters announces: "Drug Addiction Is NOT a Disease. It's a Sin." At another, clients pass by a poster of an addict in a hospital bed, ripping IV tubes out of his arms and throwing his pills in the garbage. An angel hovers nearby, offering her protection from this plague of prescriptions.

And at a Christian young adult home in Corpus Christi, police recently took the unusual step of arresting a supervisor after teenagers complained that they were beaten and roped to a bed, all in the name of Christian discipline. More arrests are anticipated, authorities say.

The Nazi program for the extermination of European Jewry is the most vile, disgusting, horrific treatment of a people by another people in the 20th Century and probably in all of human history. The story of what the Nazis did must be told and retold forever in books, films, plays and Holocaust museums. Like the Nazis, Straight, Inc. was another great 20th Century violator of civil liberties and human rights. Over 40 former Straight clients have committed suicide.

There is so much misinformation about marijuana out there, due to efforts by some to desensitize society to the harms and risks of this illegal substance. Marijuana is not only harmful, but addictive and potentially deadly. It is not a medicine in its smoked form – and hey, if you don't believe us, ask the FDA.
-- Calvina Fay

Ok Lets...
Seems the FDA has never conducted a test using cannabis.
Seems it was an FDA employees opinion quoted for this lie.
Seems Calvina has adopted Straights same old deceptions...

The FDA's Marijuana Problem

The FDA's announcement smacks of politics. How so? The FDA lets word out that it thinks using medical marijuana is scientifically untenable, then a gaggle of legislators cry foul, appealing for a crackdown; they'll earn their sound byte.

The FDA should focus on which foods and drugs are safe for Americans. It should not deliberately spark political debates over what is beneficial to Americans. Candid observers will note that this is what the agency is effectively doing.

Candid observers will also think twice about swallowing the agency's conclusions.

The FDA's Reefer Madness

Bruce Mirken, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project, retaliated with a statement: "If anybody needed proof that the FDA has become totally politicized, this is it. This isn't a scientific statement; it's a political statement."

Mirken charges that Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind., asked the FDA to make this latest statement saying that Souder is a "rabid congressional opponent of medical marijuana."

MMJ Advocates Slam ‘Politicized’ FDA Report

Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement on Friday, "It is shameful to see the FDA talking out of both sides of its mouth on this issue by declaring there is no sound research on the medical benefits of medical marijuana, but at the same time, denying researchers the opportunity to study the efficacy of cannabis."

Mirken of the Marijuana Policy Project commented that in the broader debate over drug-policy reform, the FDA’s statement strikes at a particularly vulnerable population swept up in the drug war. "From our point of view," he said, "as long as we have a ‘war on drugs,’ can we please at least remove the sick and wounded from the battlefield?"

Cannabis (and Drug) Consumption
Earth Day Tragedy-Of-Sorts
Wal-Mart, Hemp and Right-Wing Anti-Cannabis Crusades
April 22nd, 2008 By: Allen St. Pierre, NORML Executive Director

Born the same year in 1970, Earth Day and NORML have grown up side-by-side. Today, millions of Americans will celebrate and be mindful of the basic message of Earth Day: Living in harmony with nature.

Frustratingly, NORML recently discovered through a tip from a supporter and a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) that an anti-drug group based in Florida called Drug Free America Foundation (DFAF) in their zeal against anything having to do with cannabis harass major corporations and retailers to stop marketing all products that are made of hemp, books that educate about the plant and even CDs from musical artists that dare mention the word ‘hemp’.

One of DFAF’s targets was retail giant Wal-Mart. In 2005, DFAF director Calvina Fay (a former law enforcement employee) wrote to the CEO of Wal-Mart, S. Robeson Walton, bringing to his attention that of the tens of thousands of products Wal-Mart sells, DFAF took great umbrage with the company for selling two hemp-related books and a CD by Canadian rock band ‘Chixdiggit’.

“Save Money. Live Better.” (Wal-Mart motto)
A search of Wal-Mart’s webpage today, and a trip to a Wal-Mart in Maryland confirms, that apparently DFAF’s harassment of Wal-Mart worked as the company no longer sells any book titles concerning hemp, no hemp-related clothing, jewelry or backpacks. However, despite DFAF’s protest, Wal-Mart still retails CDs by Chixdiggit, featuring the song ‘Hemp, hemp hooray!’

What can cannabis consumers and concerned citizens do to counter the anti-cannabis advocacy of groups like DFAF? Do the same thing! Write to the CEOs and/or owners of retail stores and tell them that you logically want hemp-based products to purchase for all obvious reasons—hemp is an environmentally safe, responsible and valuable agricultural product that takes little fertilizer and almost no pesticide to produce a cash crop that is as utilitarian, if not more so, than the soybean.

Let prospective business owners who may have a commercial interest in selling hemp products know that virtually every country in the world (even though ‘marijuana’ is not legal in these countries to ingest) allows non-psychoactive hemp to be cultivated and used for industrial purposes/apparel, and that the two primary reasons that hemp is not a staple agricultural commodity in America is 1) because of the country’s misguided and blanket cannabis prohibition (a.k.a. Reefer Madness) created by the federal government in 1937, and 2) so-called anti-drug groups disingenuously confusing industrial hemp with marijuana for the purposes of continuing the mindless practice of opposing any human interaction at all with the cannabis plant, be it for adult recreant use, a safe/non-toxic therapeutic or as a valuable industrial plant that humans have been cultivating and employing for the betterment of society for thousands of years.

On this 38th Earth Day, do something bold for the planet and personal freedom: Support and commend your local retailers and stores that carry hemp products while at the same time opposing anti-drug groups like DFAF from making the war on some drugs any worse for society or the environment than it already has become.

Earth Day Bonus in Washington, DC - After nearly 12 years without a true hemp store, eco-minded consumers in the nation’s capital can finally purchase hemp apparel and products with the grand opening this week of Capitol Hemp in the Adams Morgan neighborhood.

The drug worrier gossip has real life consequences. Keeping a safer alternative from legitimacy by this constant barrage of unsubstantiated lies. It is almost impossible to believe these greedy ego trippers are even naive and just well meaning with good intentions. No one can bury their heads that deep, That means they not only know and prosper on persecuting Americans choosing cannabis over the status quo. They enjoy it, like some Americans were their enemy in this later day civil war. Is it that hard to see? Doesn't anyone know anyone who doesn't get hurt smoking pot? Millions do ever single day and none of this rubbish ever happens. We wouldn't tolerate anyone selling garbage schwagg or adulterated ditchweed. If they ever do it is solely do to prohibition the same as the St. Valentines Day Massacre. Enough is enough. Get over it and move on... DdC
