The Three Little Numbers Behind Cannabis Culture By Monique LeTourneau
CN Source: Daily Evergreen April 20, 2007 Washington State
Where 420 came from and how people in the Palouse spending April 20. It’s pronounced “four-twenty.” Not “four-two-zero,” or “four-hundred twenty.” The three-digit number isn’t an area code or password. It represents a holiday that surpasses time zones for marijuana users all over the world.

How To Spend a Fun, Safe Holiday By Joseph Ruchalski
CN Source: Daily Reveille April 20, 2007 Louisiana
Friday fell on the 13th last week, a great day for horror movie aficionados with all-day movie marathons and blood-red wine swilling. Today promises to be a more cheerful day in which millions around the world will celebrate by smoking, vaporizing and eating cannabis. Unsurprisingly, civilization does not plunge into irrevocable chaos on a day where so many ignore local, state and international laws, and it cannot go without mention that possession is a crime in all 50 states. If anything, restaurants and convenience stores will see a spike in sales that strengthens our economy, an ultimate act of patriotism in our post 9/11 world.

C U & Boulder: It's 4/20 By Paula Pant
CN Source: Colorado Daily April 20, 2007 Colorado
Break out your bongs. The annual marijuana-smoking celebration known as "4/20” is expected to draw a crowd of 1,000 to 3,000 people to CU's Norlin Quadrangle today. "4/20” - a public marijuana-smoking event which takes place at 4:20 p.m. on the 20th day of the fourth month - normally happens on CU's Farrand Field, but will be moved to Norlin Quad this year as Farrand undergoes renovation.

Today is the 20th of April. To many, today may just be another day on the calendar, but to some, this is the holiday of holidays. Like the generations of marijuana users before them, today's class of pot users is embracing their affection for that enchanting, ageless Mary Jane, by continuing a long legacy of marijuana love on 4/20.

Pot Advocates Celebrate 4/20 By Nate Lowry
CN Source: Cornell Daily Sun April 20, 2007 New York
While it may seem like any other Friday to some, to others, today — 4/20 — is a day that couldn’t have come soon enough. “Yeah, I’m definitely going to roll a fatty and smoke a doobie,” said one Cornell student, gearing up for today — a day on which many Cornell students will smoke cannibis, marijuana, weed, pot, grass, Mary Jane or ganga — however you choose to refer to it.

The time has come - 4:20. For those who smoke marijuana regularly, this is a holiday. Junior political science major Dan Weckesser thinks this is a popular holiday because it's an opportunity for members of a subculture to bond over what goes against the norms of the rest of society.

The History of 4/20 at CU By Gary Black
CN Source: Campus Press April 20, 2007 Colorado
Yet another 4/20 is upon us at CU, and the climate seems to be urging students to smoke marijuana on the Norlin Quad. Earlier this week, a sidewalk chalk spread the message, "4:20. 4/20/2007. Norlin Quad. Be there!" Graffiti in one of the bathroom stalls in the Norlin Library reads, "4/20 in the Quad this year. Don't get shut out." And a spray-painted "Defend 420" lurks on the ground for passers-by.

Today is “4/20,” a day celebrated by marijuana smokers across the country—and here at Harvard, Lester Grinspoon is continuing his crusade for the legalization of cannabis in the U.S. Grinspoon, an associate professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS), has advocated for legalization ever since the early 1970s when, he said, the drug helped his son overcome the painful side effects of chemotherapy.

The Real Dope On '420' By Bob Link
CN Source: Globe-Gazette April 20, 2007 Mason City, Iowa
Four-20. A time, a day and a message used by drug users. The number is spray-painted on a Highway 18 bridge pillar along Claybanks Drive just southwest of Mason City. The graffiti includes a psychedelic mushroom, marijuana leaf and the words “dank” and “skunk.” Alone, the words and numbers mean little. But ask someone from law enforcement and the spray-painted messages take on a whole new meaning.

"We'd better have enough Twinkies and Ho Hos backstage," jokes Bredrin Daddys guitarist Brian Murphy. "And some milk to wash it down." Junk food might sound like an unusual backstage request for a band, but not when the group in question is performing in a pro-marijuana concert on the most celebrated day on the stoner calendar, April 20, a date known to pot smokers as four-twenty (or 4/20, 4:20 or 420).

What Does 4:20 Mean To You? By Leslie Brefeld
CN Source: Aspen Times April 19, 2007 Aspen, CO
Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML, and Steven Hager, editor of High Times magazine, are willing to give interviews any time of the year. But it’s April 20 that the people want. The date, time and number, all encompassed in 4:20, have become increasingly meaningful over the last few decades to the stoner culture, and the culture at large.

World Goes Up In Smoke Each April 20 By Greg Gotcher

Tomorrow seems like just another day to the average person, but to a number of people, tomorrow’s date marks a special occasion where all responsibilities and worries go up in smoke. Why is there such a fuss about April 20? Why do all the slackers always seem to hype this date? When April 20 finally comes around they are nowhere to be found. What are they doing?

420: Time To Take Back The Day By Victoria Carlborg
CN Source: North County Times April 15, 2007 California
Ask anyone who doesn't have an adolescent what "420" means, and they might think you need a new wristwatch. Yes, it's a time of day, but the term "420" also is a common reference for smoking marijuana. The most widely accepted theory of "420's" origination is that in the 1970s, high school-age stoners in Northern California congregated at 4:20 p.m. daily. "420" has evolved into an unofficial marijuana holiday.

Nation’s Marijuana Laws Were Founded in Bigotry By Roshan Bliss
CN Source: Exponent April 20, 2007 Indiana
President Jimmy Carter once told Congress that "penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself. Nowhere is this clearer than in the laws against the possession of marijuana in private for personal use." That was in 1976. Today, despite the efforts of Carter and many others like him, laws prohibiting marijuana continue to carry penalties and consequences far more damaging than an individual's actual use of marijuana.

Weeding Out The Facts By Katy Bruck
CN Source: Daily Collegian April 20, 2007 Massachusetts
Believe it or not, marijuana is a commonly discussed and debated aspect of college life. The plant itself is pretty harmless, especially compared to alcohol, cigarettes or harder drugs, and it could comfort thousands of critically and chronically ill cancer and AIDS patients. Most of the problems with the marijuana decriminalization/legalization debate revolve around rhetoric. It tends to elicit skepticism particularly of the reform coalitions that are based on college campuses.

The legalization of marijuana has become a banner picked up by stoners across the country. It's time to put that green flag down because this is no longer about you and your flaring tree. Hundreds Rally in Denver To Support Marijuana Legalization By Deborah Frazier
CN Source: Rocky Mountain NewsColorado
More than 700 people gathered in Denver's Civic Center Park today as part of the national "4/20" rally to protest laws against marijuana. The Denver event held on April 20, or 4/20, at 4:20 p.m. drew high school and college students and others, mostly in their 20s.
"It's a weed smoking festival," said Joe Smith, 18, who recently moved to Denver from Nevada. "I believe in the medicinal benefits of marijuana."
"Everyone came together to smoke marijuana and chill," said G.K. Hoovers, 20, of Aurora. "It's been cool. There were no problems."
The rally also drew about 100 Denver Police, including the SWAT team, the mounted patrol, undercover members of the vice and narcotics bureau, the gang unit and other departments, said police spokeswoman Virginia Quinones.
"Even though marijuana smoking isn't illegal in Denver, it's still illegal in Colorado," she said.
Officers contacted people who were openly smoking marijuana and checked identification, said Quinones. Those with outstanding warrants for other crimes were arrested and the rest were given citations for possession and public consumption of marijuana. She said the number of arrests and citations wouldn't be available until later tonight.
The crowd, many wearing leis of fabric marijuana leaves, was friendly and light-hearted.
"I came on vacation to Denver for this," said Francine Popovich, 18, of Sedona, Ariz. "All of my friends at home are so jealous. Look how many people showed up. It's shows how many people want marijuana legalized."
Some visitors to Denver wandered into the gathering by mistake, including Jim and Kathy Arthur of Iowa, who walked toward downtown after seeing the Art Museum.
"It's our generation that started all of this," she said.
"We're just beer drinkers," he said. "It certainly adds to our adventure."

4/20 at North Beach By Kate Duffy
CN Source: WCAX News April 20, 2007 Burlington, Vermont
It's April 20th, and pot smokers took time for the annual 4-20 observation.
The day has traditionally seen rallies on college campuses pushing for the legalization of marijuana.
UVM has cracked down on activity on campus in the past few years. So several hundred college students instead packed North Beach this afternoon. Most said they were there to enjoy the gorgeous weather, but when the clock struck 4:20, quite a few lit up a joint.
"We're always on the beach doing exactly the same thing as right now," said Harrison Hagan, a student at UVM. "No one seems to have a problem with it.
Whoever runs the beach never has given us a hard time, we've never been kicked off the beach. As long as we clean up and leave the beach in it's natural form, it shouldn't be a problem."
Police said no one registered complaints about pot use and no arrests were made.

NORML Affiliates Nationwide To Celebrate 'High Holiday'
April 19, 2007 - Washington, DC, USA
NORML affiliates in more than a dozen states will be holding events this Friday, April 20th, to acknowledge "420" - the official day for cannabis awareness. NORML chapters Dallas, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Santa Barbara, Tuscon and other cities across the nation will hold rallies commemorating the day, and will call on their elected officials to stop arresting adults who consume cannabis responsibly.
"April 20th has emerged as the most organic and culturally driven day of cannabis awareness, not just in the United States, but also worldwide," said NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre. "However, while this is a day of notable celebration, it also is a stark reminder of the absurdity of cannabis prohibition in our free market-oriented, democratic society."
For a complete listing of NORML affiliated "420" events, please contact Erin Dame, NORML Outreach Coordinator, at (202) 483-5500. Additional information is available online at: norml.org or hightimes.com
A special "420" edition of NORML's podcast will air this Friday at: normlaudiostash.com

The sprinklers were off and the police photographers were absent at this year’s 4/20 marijuana celebration at the University of Colorado, which drew more people than ever. About 3,000 revelers crowded Norlin Quad at 4:20 p.m. Friday for the unofficial gathering. But instead of trying to break up the event with barricades or sprinklers — or get pictures of offenders — as they have in recent years, police showed up at the annual smokeout mostly to monitor it.

"One of the problems that the marijuana-reform movement consistently faces is that everyone wants to talk about what marijuana does, but no one ever wants to look at what marijuana prohibition does. Marijuana never kicks down your door in tbe middle of the night. Marijuana never locks up sick and dying people, does not suppress medical research, does not peek in bedroom windows."

On yesterday's episode of Fox's animated sitcom "Family Guy," one of the main characters - a dog named Brian - is arrested for possession of marijuana. He subsequently goes on a mission to legalize the drug, at one point earnestly arguing that it is only outlawed because William Randolph Hearst wanted to keep hemp production from hurting his paper interests in the 1930s. Yes, the argument was articulated by an animated dog. And yes, the response from one of the other characters was, well, a fart. But still: Last night, a serious argument for marijuana legalization was articulated on a major American cable network during prime time. Read More...

Staying true to tradition, thousands of people celebrated Four Twenty in and around Porter Meadow at UC Santa Cruz on April 20th, 2009. Four Twenty (420) is a time of day when people smoke cannabis together. For that reason, April 20th has evolved into a counterculture holiday where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis. Porter Meadow at UCSC has traditionally been the largest 420 gathering point around. Despite the restrictions established by the UCSC administration and police to curtail the unorganized convergence, people showed they were determined to celebrate Four Twenty, with friends and strangers, in the Porter Meadow.

Each year on April 20th, at 4:20pm, people celebrate and smoke cannabis together. One of the biggest gathering spots in California, perhaps the biggest, is Porter Meadow at UC Santa Cruz. It's a large event for the whole community - a place where thousands of people can have a picnic, play with musical instruments, frisbees, kites and just have fun. It's in a safe and relatively secluded location and problems are rare.
