The exhibit opens Friday, August 11. At present, I plan to be there the opening Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
It would be great to have some company, obviously. Also, we can look toward additional days throughout the run of the exhibit.
Leave a post here (or send me an email/PM) if you're willing to stand out there for a few hours or a day or a weekend.
Here are the museum's hours:
July 20 – September 4
Monday through Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
September 5 – November 16

Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Pete I strongly suggest bringing a friend with at least a digital camera and at best a videocam with sound. You can easily tape over unnneeded images.
9 days out of 10 it will seem like overkill, but that one day in ten it will be worth its weight in gold for evidence to be used against illegitimate interference.
Pete how far do you live from the exhibit? _________________ We can help you increase your media - http://www.mapinc.org/resource

Digital still camera's no problem -- I'm very well prepared there -- but you're right, video capability might not be bad.
Again, I'm really not looking for confrontation. I'm envisioning a very polite, museum-like and family-friendly protest. Sort of a "Welcome to the museum. Would you like some supplementary material about the new exhibit?" approach. Very little to give anyone even close to a legitimate reason to complain.
But, of course, the museum could take a different view.
I'm roughly 150 miles away from the museum, so I'll be limited in how much I can be up there, although I've already planned on the opening weekend.
For continued presence, I'm going to have to hope that a local SSDP organization or individual can take care of having the flyers available, etc. (or I'll just ship packets of them to the individuals who are volunteering.) |

I've added a separate page for volunteer information (not much there, yet, but as we get closer to time...).

Pete, how's the response been from SSDP? Are they gonna be able to spare enough bodies for this? Man, wish I was in the area, I'd be happy to stand outside and hawk the truth with ya. _________________ The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is

The SSDP administration has been great. And there are advisors for several local chapters that have been involved and will probably personally be there with me this weekend.
Unfortunately, summer is a difficult time to locate the students in the groups, but school will start soon and the exhibit goes all the way until December, so there's plenty of time to make an impact. |

Good deal. I emailed the museum to try and find out the approximate number of daily visitors last week but so far have not recieved any response. I guess you will get a first hand count this weekend. I live in the Chicago area and I want to help. I'm available Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends to help pass out flyers. If any other work needs to be done I can probably handle that as well. I just found out about this exhibit about 20min ago and I am surprised and dismayed that the Museum of Science and Industry would participate in this farce. I love that museum.
I can be reached by email at tsol920 at walla.com
I just read about the adventure trying to pass out flyers on Friday. It's always amazing how confrontational people can become even when the other person is being calm and considerate.
Let me know what I can do, and it's done.
Peace. _________________ "Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance" - Will Durant |

Thanks, Basidia -- I'll be in touch and work out the details. I can either ship some flyers directly to you, or have you connect with SSDP's George Pappas in Chicago, who has a supply (whichever is easiest for you).
I'm also sending a letter today to the legal counsel of the Chicago Park District, informing them of our plans and asking them to inform Museum Security Supervisors of the constitutional law. |

Connecting with SSDP's George Pappas sounds fine with me. Thanks for the quick response. _________________ "Education is a progressive discovery of our own ignorance" - Will Durant |

Boy Pete, some great support on this...
I almost flew into Chitown Fri nite but couldn't quite justify the $500 + to get me there and back. If I had my new digital camera...

Welcome, Smitty --
It's possible that we might get a group together from the Illinois State chapter of SSDP (formerly M.A.S.H.) |
