Some of you may have seen the discussion I had on Newsvine on the addictive potential of cocaine. Often, there are those who, either deliberately or lot more often, ignorantly, claim that this or that drug is extremely addictive. So, I've decided to mine the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2004) dataset and collect in one place some key statistics on the usage patterns of various common substances. The data on many drugs is typically not as detailed, so they are omitted for now, but may be added later. I may update this thread later with data from other surveys like Monitoring the Future.

The results below pertain to the US population between ages 12-64.

Background information on use & dependence
Alcohol
Marijuana
Cocaine, except crack
Crack Cocaine
Heroin
Heroin, non-injected
Methamphetamine
Methamphetamine, non-injected

Upcoming features:

2002-initiate details
Risk/availability correlation with use

Before the drug-specific entries, I'll point to a few general resources.

In 1999, The Institute of Medicine, as per request of the ONDCP, conducted a review of the potential medical uses of marijuana. In that report, they included a table derived from the first National Comorbidity Survey (1990-1992).

Similarly, in 2003, the British Govt. prepared a report on the drug war for internal consumption. In the first part, this slide below was presented.

One aspect not sufficiently appreciated is that method of drug use i.e. route of administration, has a significant impact on the addictive potential of the very same drug. Hence, it is misleading to say that cocaine has 'this much' addictive potential. The variables related to use such as dose, method & the user's specific vulnerability are critically important.

This feature is particularly apparent in the real-world setting.

From the study A comparison of 'visible' and 'invisible' users of amphetamine, cocaine and heroin: two distinct populations?, where 'visible' users (contact group) are those exposed to the police or social services or treatment agencies.

Now that some background has been established, let's move onto the specific drugs.

Notes:
*All variables, where possible, incorporate imputed data.
*NVC == No Valid Cases in the database.
*Percentages may not add up to 100 due to rounding.
*There's a huge margin of error in the figures derived from among the sample when the prevalence is low, as in the case of crack cocaine use.
